Art Journalling And Preparations

I finished up two new pages in my art journal today, bringing my total new pages up to six. Now, when I count pages in terms of art, I count by subject matter. So a two leaf spread to me counts as one page. No? Too bad!

In the normal world of page counting, I'm 173 pages into my 537 page book. Still a long way to go! To be fair though, the pages are sort of flimsy, so I sometimes glue 2 pages together to double the thickness. With the amount of bulge going on in the book already, I don't know if I'll be able to fill all the pages without it looking like one of those vintage Reader's Digest Christmas Trees. I may need to just start painting and using thin paper bits on a lot of pages instead of collaging everything. We'll see.

We're going camping this weekend and I plan to bring my journal along. Hopefully I'll get some journalling done. I just need to remember to bring my book, small watercolours, pen and a glue stick. Never know what you'll find to glue in your journal.

  1. Holy crap, I love your pages!!!!

A little hint that I read about in a book: before you start journaling, go through and remove a page from the book every now and again so that the pages will still lay flat after you've thickened them with paint and collage.

Just take a pair of scissors or a craft blade thingy, and cut the page out, leaving about 1/4 to 1/2 inch of the paper next to the binding, so there is like a long tab left connected to the spine (geez I hope that makes sense, lol!). You can decorate the tabs, and it keeps your book laying (mostly) flat.

I often glue pages together for my books, too. I go through the whole book at one time, gluing 2 pages, then cutting out the third, so it's ready to go when I start out.

  2. Thank you!

Actually, that makes perfect sense! I'm going to have to try that out, since I still have so much book to go. Maybe I can cut out a few pages at a time and add postcards of something into the book, using the tabs as connectors. (if that makes sense...) I think you've just opened up a whole can of worms for me!

I went through and glued a few pages together, then wanted to stitch some of them, and was annoyed that I have to stitch through 2 pages and glue a third page to them to hide the stitching, making the whole thing a bit too chunky for my liking. Now I just do it as I go. It was really helpful especially with the magpie page, since I decided to 'stitch' bits of the nest with gold jewelry wire. It kind of gets lost in the small photo, so if your curiosity gets the best of you, you can see it in the larger version, here.
