Coming off the tale end of the great summer funk (as I am now calling it because of it's unseasonal appearance and length), the dude and I decided to take a quick weekend trip across the border into Asheville, NC.
As we drove North into the mountains I could feel a weigh lifting off of me. Mountains, like the ocean, are one of the few things that will chase my depression off like a thief in the night. Getting into town and just spending a day doing touristy things, laughing, window shopping, trying a few different beers and not having a worry in the world were just the icing on the cake.
First thing we did was roll up to the visitors center and hop onto one of their shiny bright red trolleys. Not only was the tour interesting but it offered hop off/hop on service at several places around the city. We totally took advantage of that, since Joe's foot is still not completely healed and feeling great.
We saw some interesting architecture.
Visited some arts and crafts shops.
Met some interesting characters.
Found an excellent pub...
..and a drawing model of a dinosaur.
While our original intention was to go apple picking on Sunday, Joe's foot was hurting (despite his best efforts to pretend he wasn't limping) so we took a quick peek at Biltmore Village before any of the shops opened up before heading home.
I needed this wee escape more than I realized but while I feel way more relaxed and peaceful than I have in months, I'm still not looking forward to going back to work today. You can't win them all! ;-)
You know, summer tends to depress the crap out of me, too. All that sun and heat, ugh! Give me a chilly cloudy day and a very brief summer any day.
ReplyDeleteAnd Asheville...oh, Asheville. It's my dream to retire there. All the arts and crafts and yummy food and beautiful architecture and the alternative lifestyles...
Anyway, glad to see you had such a soothing and fun time!
Yay for you two cuties. A day trip in such a gorgeous place sounds like it took your doldroms and remolded them into a smiley face....looks like it too.
ReplyDeleteWhen we went to SC to see the kiddos, we stayed in Ashville....oh my, I could really get into so much trouble there. Great place, great vibe....gorgeous. The mountains in a few weeks there will be a varitable quilt of autumnal splendor...lucky yous guys. XOXO Oma Linda
I lived in Ashville for a while when I was a little girl and have always wanted to go back to visit. This makes me want to do so even more.
ReplyDeleteThat picture of you two is adorable. :)
Ahhhh....I was born and raised in Asheville and I loved seeing your pics! I knew that was a magical town every day I lived there and am so grateful that I have the pleasure of calling it home. My hubbin and I are going back for a few days (from our current home in CA) next month and I couldn't be happier. The only thing cooler than growing up there is getting to go back and be a tourist! Wheeeee!
ReplyDeleteOoooooh! I wanna go there!! Summer is a bummer for me too. It's so hot and we are always so broke for some reason. This place is amazing. I love love Green Man pub! Hahaha
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, you guys are so damn cute I smack you.
ReplyDeleteSecond of all, I've always wanted to go to Ashville. Even though my visa to the Southern part of the U.S. has been revoked....perhaps I will sneak in one day ; )
A nice break from reality ~ even if it was only for a wee bit! Everyone needs to get away now and then! I hope the coming Autumn weather ushers in a fresh 'new you'!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun trip! I'm glad you guys got to go on a mini vacation. ^-^ Also glad it's lifted some of your summer blues. It has indeed been a strangely blue summer... o_O
ReplyDeleteI totally plopped down in front of my computer & watched episodes of Warehouse 13 & NCIS til my eyes about fell out... while I wasn't in anything nearly so snazzy as supergirl pjs, I was quite comfy in my... wait... I think I was in just my undies... @_@
Hope you've had good days at work. And thanks for the encouragement!
XOXO
what a wonderful trip away we all deserve a break from time to time, good on ya it looks so cool :)
ReplyDeleteOh Danni, what gorgeous pictures. You and the dude are so adorable! It is always wonderful to have a little getaway and then I love to get back home but when I do, I never want to go back to work either.;-)
ReplyDeleteI've been to Asheville, NC several times as my BFF from kindergarten lives in Greensboro, NC. It's a very pretty place!
